Cyclist Awareness Test : TreeHugger
I enjoyed this video and it also made me think of a few other tips I wish drivers kept in mind when driving around bicyclists.
- In many states and cities it’s illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk. It’s actually more safe to ride on the road.
- Drivers using turn signals have saved my life (I know they’re turing right in front of me), and their not using them have almost cost me it a few times.
- Bicyclists have to keep a safe clearance from driver-side doors, just in case a door goes swinging open. This means that a bicyclist needs to ride at least 24 inches to the outside of a parked car. Don’t feel frustrated with them when they do this.
- Finally, a driver is way more protected by metal than a bicyclist. That being the case, don’t rush red-lights when you’ve got a bicyclist coming head on.
