My forever-trip ended last evening when I finally arrived in Birmingham (UK). We left our house Sunday morning around 8:15am, and I arrived in Brum at about 12pm Monday (PST), though it was actually 7pm here. I had the unfortunate luck of spending 7 hours in the Calgary airport with a layover. There wasn’t anything wrong, all the flights were running normal, I just somehow landed the 7 hour layover ticket.

Calgary airport kind of reminded me of Alliance Ohio’s Carnation Mall, if you’ve been there you know just about how lame one building can be. I mean, there were a couple nice things about the airport, and the people were friendly enough and the seats were cushy, but there wasn’t much to choose from in terms of food, and no free internet. I think free web-access in airports should just be a standard thing these days, and it should definitely not cost $10 per hour to use it! That way, if it was free, I could use Skype to call home instead of having my credit card charged through a pay-phone, only God knows how much that’s going to cost!

Anyways, the 9 hour flight from Calgary to London was pretty long. Fortunately I scored the front seat so I had lots of leg room. I sat beside a cool guy named Eric who is a Med student from Calgary and was on his way to do a three week internship in India. I tried sleeping from 1am-5am, but it was the longest four hours of my life. I think I woke up every ten minutes to reposition my numb body. But I love Air Canada for at least two reasons: free wine or beer, and great touch-screen monitors with tons of movies, and television shows. I watched “There Will Be Blood” and “The Bucket List” instead of reading the 2 books I brought.

Then after arriving in London, I caught the National Express (Bus) and rode that for three hours to Brum, picked up a little food at EAT. and caught the 62 bus down to Woodbrooke.

After I got caught up on emails, a couple skype phone calls, and a video chat to L, I crashed for 9.5 hours. I’m feeling much better today, and have had a fairly productive morning. My first day back in the UK has been pretty good.

There was a moment of let down once I walked into my room here though, I remembered this place as not only be a fun place to be, but also the place I lived away from Emily for 8 weeks last year (while she was newly pregnant). It was like subconscious revolted for a minute thinking, “Woodbrooke is the place where I am the furthest from my family.” So, it was nice to see L over video chat last night, and see/talk with Emily this morning for few this morning. I guess I’m glad we don’t live in the days when a letter took weeks to get where it was going.
